Technical Writer-Engineering Support Specialist (Submarines)
Active Secret clearance is required at the time of hire

We are seeking a mid-level Engineering Support Specialist with 6+ years of experience to support the development and delivery of technical documentation and training products for U.S. Navy systems, specifically the Common Weapons Launcher (CWL) and Multi Tube Weapons Simulator (MTWS).

  • Writing and editing technical manuals
  • Creating operations & maintenance procedures
  • Producing training materials
  • Formatting content using S1000D / IETMs
  • Ensuring compliance with DoD documentation standards

This role requires strong communication skills and hands-on experience with submarine combat systems, particularly AN/BYG-1. The ideal candidate will support technical documentation, validation efforts, and training material development in both lab and operational environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review and provide feedback on draft maintenance documents and technical manuals
  • Familiarity with DoD standards including:
    • MIL-STD-3001
    • MIL-STD-38784
    • MIL-STD-24784
    • MIL-STD-40051-2C
  • Develop, edit, and maintain operations and maintenance procedures
  • Create technical manuals and training documentation for Navy systems
  • Validate test procedures during lab and onboard submarine testing events (including shift work as needed)
  • Support Navy customers in lab-based and field environments
  • Ensure documentation complies with applicable DoD standards and specifications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and training teams


 
Job Requirements

 
Required Skills / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Technology or Engineering.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience with the submarine fleet combat system, AN/BYG-1 / Fire Control Technician.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience using S1000D to develop and publish Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals

Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Qualified Master Training Specialist.
  • Ability to prepare documentation for delivery in a variety of formats (e.g. .doc, .PDF, HTML and XML/SGML-tagged online and IETM).
  • Familiarity with military documentation using current DoD specifications and standards including, but not limited to, MIL-STD-3001, MIL-STD-38784, MIL-STD-24784, and MIL-STD 40051-2C.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel a must), XMLSpy, MS Visio, PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of military/commercial requirements/specifications.
  • Previous experience developing Navy training documents and material.
  • Employs Instructional Design practices to design curriculum to support operations and maintenance training.
  • Familiarity with Linux/Unix systems.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and work well under pressure.
  • Previous Navy experience.
  • Proven conflict management skills.
  • Demonstrated skills consistent with a team-based work environment.
 
Additional Information:
  • Requires an active Secret Clearance.
  • Upon offer of employment, the individual will be subject to a background check.

  • Travel to support Navy customers in a lab-based environment.
  • Willingness to travel and perform duties onboard naval vessels.
