Description

The R&D Leader position is a supervisory position in a business-based R&D and manufacturing environment. The department's primary focus is the development of synthetic and analytical platforms for the manufacture of specialty chemicals and pharma chemicals including key starting materials (KSM), regulatory starting materials (RSM) and pharmaceutical intermediates. The Leader is expected to support the innovative development and execution of technical projects within the department via supervision of direct reports and technical oversight of projects. In addition, the Leader is expected to perform a variety of administrative tasks and to advance strategic business objectives.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Follow all process SOPs to ensure quality product and data is produced.
  
Responsibilities:
 
  • Plan and implement innovative chemical and analytical solutions appropriate for the commercial manufacture of specialty chemicals and pharmaceutical materials.
  • Coordinate closely with commercial team with respect to acquisition of new projects and new clients.
  • Perform literature searches and provide technical guidance in the design and evaluation of synthetic processes.
  • Prepare quotations in response to internal and/or external requests.
  • Represent R&D and the organization in client-facing visits and coordinate directly with clients' representatives on all technical details of project execution.
  • Serve as site technical expert with respect to all R&D activities.
  • Manage the training and professional developmental of direct reports.
  • Manage the technical execution of projects by subordinates.
  • Ensure that projects assigned to self and to direct reports are conducted in accordance with expected timelines and budgets.
  • Provide input to Senior Management regarding the development and implementation of newly innovative technologies.
  • Manage group expenditure such that laboratory activities are being conducted within agreed upon budgets.
  • Author and train employees on the use of written procedures including training documents and operating procedures.
  • Work in accordance with FDA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, DOT and other regulatory agency guidelines.
  • Adhere to ethical and behavioral standards as outlined in the employee handbook.
 
Job Requirements

 
Required Skills / Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry
- 5 years of leadership experience in chemical manufacturing environment

- Demonstrated expertise through publication and project execution in synthetic organic chemistry and associated analytical techniques.
- Knowledge of experimental design techniques and thermal hazards evaluation techniques.
- Scientific problem solving skills, i.e. ability to identify crucial issues in experimental work and suggest possible solutions.
- Ability to read and understand patents, interact with designated legal counsel and provide technical support on the impact of area of science of interest.
